Gullah Gold Rum | A Spirit of Heritage. A Legacy Worth Preserving.
Gullah Gold brings another expression of Hilton Head Island's heritage to life.Created in collaboration with Hilton Head Distillery, this thoughtfully crafted aged gold rum honors the island's Gullah community and the enduring cultural connections between the Caribbean, the coastal South, and the people whose traditions helped shape the Lowcountry.More than a locally produced spirit, Gullah Gold represents a shared commitment to preserving history, celebrating craftsmanship, and investing in the community that makes Hilton Head Island unlike anywhere else. With a portion of every bottle sold supporting our cultural preservation mission, Gullah Gold is a collaboration with a purpose that extends well beyond the bottle.Thoughtfully crafted. Distinctively Lowcountry.
Intention
At Hilton Head Distillery, the process begins with blackstrap molasses produced from South Carolina sugarcane. The molasses is fermented before undergoing a two-stage distillation process, during which the distillers carefully select the heart of the run, the portion best suited to creating the finished spirit. From there, the rum is aged in barrels, where time and wood gradually influence its color, character, and complexity.
Purpose
Through the Native Island Business & Community Affairs Association (NIBCAA), the organization also works to preserve cultural traditions, encourage economic opportunity, support education, and strengthen the island's Native Gullah community. Through our partnership with Hilton Head Distillery, a portion of every bottle sold will benefit NIBCAA, helping sustain the programs, initiatives, and community opportunities that keep Gullah heritage alive for future generations.
Rooted in history. Made on Hilton Head Island.
Rum has a long and complicated history, one deeply connected to sugarcane cultivation, Caribbean trade, the transatlantic slave trade, and the agricultural economies of the Americas. That history also intersects with the story of the Gullah Geechee people, whose ancestors were brought from West and Central Africa to the coastal regions of South Carolina, Georgia, and beyond. Through generations, they preserved and developed distinctive traditions of food, language, music, artistry, agriculture, and community life. Those traditions remain a vital part of Hilton Head Island today.Gullah Gold recognizes these connections while celebrating the creativity, resilience, and living heritage of the island's Native Gullah community. It offers an opportunity to introduce visitors to a deeper understanding of the place they are visiting and the people whose legacy continues to define its character.
